The County of Maui faces serious challenges in regards to wastewater treatment. On the west side the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility is constantly under fire from local residents, the EPA and various environmental groups. One of the main issues is the contamination of the reef and nearby beaches due to seepage of sewage from the injection wells. Another major issue is the odor from the facility affecting the new developments that have sprouted in the vicinity. The outdated technology, water scarcity issues, environmental pollution and raw sewage odor all warrant a new approach to wastewater treatment.

The Kahului  Wastewater Reclamation Facility is located on the shore at the very front of a tsunami flood zone at Kanaha Beach.  The county is currently entertaining the idea of a 13 foot seawall to protect the facility, which is well below the 28 foot tsunami of 1946. Besides the apparent environmental danger, this facility relies on injection wells to dispose of the effluent, instead of treating the wastewater to R1 levels which could be used for agricultural purposes.

Mana Water is working on feasibility studies to retrofit and relocate the facilities mentioned above. Partnered with Organica, we can resolve the above problems with either public or private funding. This approach will save the tax payers money, recycle over a billion gallons of water per year, all in a sustainable, aesthetic manner, on a fraction of acreage, thus freeing up valuable land and eliminating unpleasant odors.

For Developers

Developers are often faced with a number of challenges when considering wastewater treatment. Mana Water is able to relieve this bottleneck by turning a problem into a dual recurring revenue stream. Mana Water Management offers the following to new developments:

- Lower Capital investment cost when compared to competing technology

- Lower operation costs when compared to competing technology

- Create an aesthetically pleasing WWTF (Wastewater treatment facility)

- Decrease acreage for WWTF when comparing GPD (gallons per day) size to competing technology

- Lower buffer zone around facility to allow for maximum real estate usage

- Sell R1 effluent (treated water) to the community or nearby farms
